What to expect when you call

You will reach a trained volunteer or counselor. They will listen, without judgment, for as long as you need. You don’t have to know what to say. You don’t have to be in “enough” of a crisis. You don’t have to give your name. Most calls last 20–40 minutes.

If you’re worried about someone in your life, the same helplines can help you, too. They offer guidance for friends and family members on how to start a conversation, what to listen for, and when to involve emergency services.
