What Calyn can and cannot do.

Important information about the clinical nature of this service. Please read before using Calyn.

Calyn is a guidance tool for general wellness and self-reflection. It is not a medical device, not a healthcare provider, and not a substitute for professional care.

Not a medical service

Calyn is not a medical service, healthcare provider, or licensed therapist. It does not diagnose any mental, physical, or behavioral health condition. It does not prescribe, recommend, or substitute for medication. It is not approved, cleared, or regulated as a medical device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, or any other regulatory authority.

Not for emergencies

Calyn is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, thoughts of harming yourself or others, or any medical emergency, please:

Choose professional care when you can

If you are choosing between Calyn and professional care, we strongly encourage you to choose professional care. Calyn exists to widen access for people who can’t reach a clinician right now — because of cost, geography, waitlists, or the courage it takes to start. It is not a better option than a human therapist; it is a different one, and a complement at best.

If you are already in therapy, please check with your clinician before adding Calyn to your routine, so the two don’t pull in different directions.

The role of AI in your conversations

The model behind Calyn. Calyn’s replies are generated by a third-party large language model — currently DeepSeek, which operates from China. When you send a voice message, it is transcribed by OpenAI’s Whisper. Calyn’s replies are produced automatically; they are not written or reviewed by a person before you see them.

Every response Calyn produces is generated by a large language model. AI systems are imperfect: they can misinterpret context, produce inaccurate information, miss important cues, and respond in ways that may not be appropriate for your specific circumstances. We work to reduce these risks, but we cannot eliminate them.

You should treat Calyn’s responses as one perspective among many, not as definitive advice. Do not act on Calyn’s responses in ways that could harm you or others without first consulting a qualified professional.

Therapeutic frameworks referenced

Calyn’s conversational patterns draw on principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and motivational interviewing. References to these frameworks do not constitute the delivery of therapy. Therapy, as a clinical practice, can only be delivered by a licensed human professional.

Outcome claims

We do not claim that Calyn will treat, cure, prevent, or improve any specific mental or physical health condition. Any statistics or outcome data we publish on our research page describe aggregate, self-reported user trends and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of personal benefit. Individual experiences vary.

Limitations of use

  • Calyn is intended for users aged 18 and older.
  • Calyn is not appropriate for individuals experiencing severe psychiatric symptoms (e.g. psychosis, severe depression, suicidal ideation, mania) without concurrent professional care.
  • Calyn is not appropriate for individuals seeking a primary treatment for diagnosed mental health conditions.
  • Calyn is not a substitute for prescribed medication or recommended therapy.

Your acknowledgment

By using Calyn, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the limitations described on this page, including the limitations of AI, the absence of medical claims, and the requirement to seek professional help when needed. Use of Calyn is at your own discretion and risk.
